Lost in Halong Bay

Kayaking on Halong Bay

When the bus pulled up to the departure point for Halong Bay I was a little put-off by the incredible number of tourists. But I had heard that Vietnamese drive boats the same way they drive motorbikes and I was looking forward to that.

As it turns out, the bay of 3,000 islands proved big enough to avoid other tour groups once we left the harbour. After a stop at a secluded beach it was time to go kayaking.

A British guy in the group claimed to be an expert kayaker, who had braved furious rapids for years. I wasn’t an expert kayaker by any means, but I had done it enough to speak of it casually, which is what got him started on his rant.

“It’s just like a canoe,” I said.

“A canoe?” yelped the expert. “It’s not at all like a canoe. It’s a kayak!”

Our guide gave us the kayaks and told us to be back in an hour. The only rules were no leaving the kayak and no swimming. There were three groups: myself and a Swedish girl, two British, and a German couple.

We took off for a set of karsts that looked like none of the other tour groups had gotten to yet.

It was exciting to paddle up close to the edge of one of the islets. The limestone facade jutted out of the water – seemingly from nowhere – and reached into the sky.

We paddled through a tunnel in one of the karsts and found ourselves inside a large alcove, surrounded on all sides by a tall oval island. We floated around without talking or paddling. The slapping of the water against the sides of the kayaks was all that caused a slight echo.

There was no one else around so we decided it was time for a swim. We had a long pleasant swim around our inlet and back into the cave. The sun began to set and we decided we had better get back to the boat before it was dark.

We all got back in our kayaks easily except the two British people, who capsized the kayak and lost a set of glasses and a mobile phone. They claimed to have been stung by a jellyfish.

“A jellyfish! Can you believe that?”

After a laugh we took off, in hope of finding the boat before we lost the sun.

Once out of the cave we paddled in the general direction of the boat but we couldn’t quite remember where it was. The sun had gone down and we had to circumvent some islands that none of us could remember or see. The Germans were strong and shot out ahead of us. I was paddling hard but couldn’t keep up and the two Brits fell even farther behind.

By the time we had turned a corner to where we thought the boat was, we had completely lost the light and couldn’t see our boat. We did see a few boats in the distance and we chose the middle one and paddled for it. But the boats were moving and we lost which one we were paddling for.

For a long while we paddled from boat to boat without finding the right one. I was a little worried and my arms were tired but it was also stirring to paddle around the karsts in the dark. We had no sense of direction and no idea where we were going.

I was a little disappointed when I saw our guide come paddling up to us with a flashlight. He directed us back to the boat and went out after the two missing British. I was jealous. They got really lost and weren’t back for another hour.

That must have been fun. And that’s how it is in Vietnam: it’s not all tour-guides, fanny packs, and tourists. If you explore a little bit you might just find yourself out on your own. You might even find yourself pleasantly lost.

Halong Bay Boat Trip and Jelly fish

Myself and Caroline had a trip booked to Halong Bay for two days and one night on a boat. The previous night we went to call for David and Teri in their hotel. David wanted to watch the Rangers vs Dundee game on TV so we polled up with a large bottle of vodka which we bought for the boat and a small bottle of vodka that we could drink before we went out.

Needless to say both bottles got drunk pretty quickly and David was dispatched to the office to procure another large bottle. We vaguely remember ending up in a bar until 5am which was not a particularly good idea consider me and C had a 7am start. Which bar?, we are not sure but it was the one with the smallest pool table on the planet. We inexplicably ended up smoking a bong with some work men who were paving the street at 5am in the morning, got lost and had to get a motor to take us two blocks. I suspect when we see David and Teri in Laos they may or may not be able to shed some light on the situation.

When our tour guide knocked on our door early the next morning things were not too perky, considering we were not packed and not showered, we got our arses into gear pretty swiftly and were loaded onto the mini bus feeling like badgers had shat in our throats and mice were playing a game with iron footballs in our heads.

I tired to purchase a large bottle of water from across the road but they claimed they did not sell water. This was not good, we were dying of thirst, the bus was very hot and C was feeling really ill. After asking the driver to stop for water at the next convenient shop, and his subsequent ignore of my police request, I lost my cool a little, scared him a little and he stopped. We loaded up with nice water.

Four hours later we arrived in Halong Town, not really wanting to be there but looking forward to spending the day on the boat chilling out.

We boarded a traditional Junk Boat. The top deck was open with sun loungers and seats, the middle deck was a bar/restaurant affair. The lower deck was the cabins. Our cabin was very nice.

On board were a couple of Argentinean girls, a Hungarian couple, A Chilean/German couple, a Malaysian couple and a group of older French people who were traveling together. Everyone was nice and friendly.

Hanlong Bay is a World Heritage Area and consists of green still sea and huge towering limestone islands, sparsely populated by greenery. The weather was overcast and it would look so much better with a blue sky backdrop. It sort of reminded me of Yangshou on Sea.

Our first stop were some amazing caves that were only discovered in the late nineties, we walked around for forty five minutes and got back on the boat

Late evening we dropped anchor in a bay and went kayaking. I had never done it before, C had once, so she was deemed the experts and took the lead in the front seat. We paddled ourselves around a nearby island and saw lots of massive jelly fish everywhere which rather put us off this idea of swimming.

After the Kayaking we waiting on the top deck, starving hungry for our food and watched the day turn into night and the lights come on the other Junks that were anchored nearby.

We were fed a very mediocre meal and everyone was in bed early due to the fact that there was not much to do.

We woke for a 7am breakfast and set sail back to Halong Town. We were due to arrive back at 4pm and then get an eighteen hour bus to Laos but we were shattered and could not face it, we decided to postpone it for twenty four hours and book back into the Blue Star Hotel for some rest.

We sort of enjoyed the trip but it was not spectacular by any means.

Damien and Tanya have gone ahead to Laos and we shall see then in a few days. David and Teri may have gone to but we are not too sure if they were sober enough.

An ode to Ha Long Bay on Indochina sails cruise

It was my fourth visit to Ha Long Bay, but the first time my mother and I could together float on the sea, from sunset to sunrise on a large wooden junk.
by Cam Giang

Follow the leader: Holidaymakers explore limestone rock formations in Ha Long Bay. Kayaking is just one of many activities tour operators offer in the area. — Photos courtesy Indochina Sails

Our three days and two nights on a the wooden junk named Valentine, of Indochina Sails may just be our most memorable trip together since I was 10 years old and accompanied my mother to visit the sea for the first time. Now I was a 20-something girl, old enough to stretch by my mother’s side on two deck chairs and enjoy the darkness surrounding the numerous white limestone towers, not to mention the melodious ballads flying up from the wooden deck into the sky. It was our first night on board, a moment so tranquil that it made a western couple stand up and waltz. At the time, our junk was still moving slowly ahead, passing through the cool sea-breeze and many gigantic limestone towers, which impressed us with their bizarre shapes in the darkness.

This wasn’t what we were expecting when we joined the newly- designed cruise.

We were excited the moment we took a tender to step onto the gigantic wooden junk, which resembled an ancient French-style palace floating on the sea. Passing through the glittering dining room, with its windows facing the sea, we reached our cabin. My mother and I immediately saw beyond the wooden doors: two parallel white sheeted beds, a jar of white Madonna lilies, two large windows covering almost half of the brown wooden wall, and a splendid view of the sea outside.

Our first day was spent relaxing on the deck and in our cabin, although there were various activities tourists could enjoy partaking in on land, such as visiting Bat Cave, Cua Van fishing village or Soi Sim Beach. Most of us were not interested in stepping off the junk, since it served as an idyllic day-trippers’ paradise. Lying on the beds at night, we could see both the high limestone towers and bright stars glittering in the dark sky.

We went to bed early that night. Perhaps it was the effect of consuming a few glasses of good red wine on deck, or the cool breeze coming in from the large window mixed in with the intoxicating air from the cream lilies, that served as soothing lullabies.

The second day began filled with energy as we woke up early to participate in a tai chi session on the sun deck. We then transferred to the day-trip boat and cruised to the bay’s most untouched areas. A buffet-style breakfast was served on the boat, which was not only impressive in its various delicious Western dishes, but also served very good Vietnamese pho (noodle soup).

By the time we completed our breakfast we had reached Ngoc Vung Island. It was sunny and none of us could refuse to take a light bicycle trip through untouched forests to enjoy the natural scenery here. After half an hour, we found ourselves in front of the endless white sand-beach with not a single human shadow in sight. From afar, the sea could appeared as an emerald. I changed into a bathing suit while my mother chose to relax under the cool shadows of the pine forest.

The highlight of the trip turned out to be kayaking in the afternoon, when our boat reached Cong Do area. All of us were very eager, although my mother seemed hesitant. She had never squeezed into a kayak before and she didn’t know how to swim.

Our yellow kayaks followed each other, moving in the low surf, with the warm waters of the sea lapping, and the cool breeze wrapping around us. The high rock formations seemed much higher when looked up and could make our way through all the narrow slots between the towers to discover a strange area where big boats couldn’t reach.

Our second day came to a good end with a delicious dinner, a grilled seafood feast, after which we went off to see people catching squids offshore. Passengers who caught squids could be found at our table for a second dinner, laughing away as they shared their funny stories.

The next morning our ship steamed forward to Sung Sot Cave, one of the bay’s most impressive limestone caverns. The entrance required a hike up stone steps to a spot high above the bay. More steps led into receding chambers, past humongous stalactites and stalagmites that resembled giant sandcastles.

Our cruise ended in the afternoon with us waving to the staff as we returned to land.

Many hesitate to vacation in a sailboat, but it is worth trying, for once you go, you will want to go again and again. It is advisable to go in a group, as you can share together all the wonderful moments of sitting standstill in the cool sea-breeze, listening to love ballads, sipping Vallformosa red wine, while the limestone towers all around move softly as the boat keeps drifting ahead.

Ha Long is like a story whose ending I thought I had reached but in reality I discovered that it has many alternative endings that need to be discovered, again and again.
